Overcoming Adversity: My Journey to Pursuing My Dreams

Today I wanted to share my story of perseverance and determination with you all. Many of you may know that I have a supportive husband, but those who knew me before him know that I have always followed my heart, even when it led me down hurtful paths. These experiences made me who I am today.

Growing up, I was a lot like my son, King Kam. Once he has his mind set on something, he will do everything in his power to get it, with or without help. This determination only grew stronger after I was released from federal prison. I was determined to be my own boss, despite the challenges of building a career as a Black person with a felony. I started college with the intent to become a photo journalist and travel the world, but after having my oldest son, I opened a photo shop with my best friend. However, my heart eventually led me to NYC with a new dream in my heart and the opportunity to escape an abusive relationship. I wrote a play and convinced a few friends to join me in a workshop tour to promote mental health and pursuing one's dreams. We started a nonprofit called Victims2Victory, but we quickly realized we needed more funding and got caught up in the fast-paced hustles of NYC. While my friends had no problem finding jobs, I struggled because of my felony. After three months in NY and feeling hopeless, I made a sign reading "I believe in the American dream, I just want a job, not welfare" and took it to Times Square with my son. I was offered three job offers that day and took the one that paid the most. That job led me to meet some of my best friends and my husband, who I have been with for ten years now.

I also had to overcome some personal obstacles to pursue my dreams. I struggled with depression and self-doubt, but my husband was always there to remind me of my talents. I learned the importance of forgiveness and that it is an action, not a feeling. The book "How to Love Difficult People" by Joyce Meyer helped me forgive many people and pray for them. I also had to let go of negative feelings and not get caught up in the past or in hurt feelings.

In conclusion, my message to you all is to never give up on yourselves or your dreams, even when they seem impossible. Learn to forgive and let go of hindrances that are holding you back. Focus on your future and don't let your emotions block your blessings. Remember, you are talented and capable of pursuing your dreams.

Five Tips in Pursuing Your Dreams

  1. Pursue your dreams with determination: Just like the author, have a strong will and determination to chase after your dreams, no matter the obstacles that may come your way.

  2. Surround yourself with supportive people: Having a support system, like a loving partner, can make all the difference in helping you overcome challenges and pursue your goals.

  3. Practice forgiveness: Forgiving those who have hurt you can be a liberating experience and help you move forward towards your dreams.

  4. Let go of negative feelings: Holding onto hurt feelings or dwelling in the past can hold you back from reaching your full potential. Practice letting go of these negative emotions.

  5. Focus on your future: Instead of getting caught up in the past or negative emotions, focus on your future and the blessings that await you as you pursue your dreams. Remember, you are talented and capable of accomplishing great things.
